Kids allergies are on the rise in young children, but solutions are hard to find. While desensitization therapy through allergy shots can help, the potential risk of anaphylactic reaction causes most allergists to turn away patients under the age of seven. And while pediatric allergy medications are available, they often provide only partial symptom relief.
That’s why many parents of young children are opting for a treatment known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). With SLIT, children as young as infants can take serum as drops under the tongue. The serum is absorbed through tiny capillaries in the mouth, providing the benefits of allergy shots without the pain or inconvenience.
“It’s the perfect program for kids,” said allergist Dr. Stuart Agren who has been using SLIT in his Arizona-based Family Allergy Clinic for the past 24 years. “Parents don’t have to nag their kids to take the serum. More often than not, the kids remind the parents because it’s fun and easy to take.”
SLIT is safe, too. As opposed to shots, there has never been a significant anaphylactic reaction from sublingual serum drops. As a result, children can take the serum drops in the comfort of their own home rather than travelling to the allergy doctor’s office a few times a week.
SLIT produces fast results. Most children experience symptom relief in just several weeks. (Most allergy shot programs take six months to two years to relieve symptoms.) SLIT works well for asthma, runny or congested nose, chronic cough, sinus and ear infections, itchy eyes, hives, and eczema.
